ty) placed ninth in the overall
standings at Madison, fourth in
Guernsey judging, and tenth in
Holstein judging. He was second
in both oral reasons and overall
standings at Harrisburg, first in
•Jersey judging, fourth in Hblsteins
and fifth in ayrshires.
Marie L. Speak, 17, of Taney
town (Carroll County) placed 12th
in the overall standings at Madi
son; fourth in Ayrshire judging;
and fourth in reasons.
At Harrisburg she finished
among the top 10 individuals in
overall standings, oral reasons.

Kristi Geary, 17. of Goshen
(Montgomery County) was the
fourth Maryland team member.
She placed 12th in the overall
standings at Harrisburg.
Finishing close behind Mary
land in this team standings at
Madison were Pennsylvania, New
York and Florida, in that order.
Indiana was a distant fifth.
The Maryland team placed first
in Jersey breed judging; third in
Ayrshire, Guernsey and Holstein
judging; and fourth in the Brown
Swiss classes.
At Harrisburg, Maryland swept
to an easy team victory in the
overall 4-H standings, with New
York, Pennsylvania. Michigan
and Wisconsin trailing far behind.

HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.)
—The PennsyWania Agricultural
Land Preservation Board
approved easement purchases for
12 farms in 8 counties, protecting
1,551 acres of prime farmland
from development
For the first time, easements
were purchased in Dauphin and
Susquehanna counties. A total of
21,609 acres in 33 counties have
been preserved in die program’s
first three years.
“We’re pleased to participate in
farmland protection efforts in
Dauphin and Susquehanna coun
ties,” said State Agriculture Sec
retary and Board Chairman Boyd
E. Wolff. ‘The Susquehanna
County farm is under develop
ment pressure, and the Dauphin
County farm is noted for its high
quality soil”
The board also approved the
purchase of farmland protection
easements in Centre, Chester,
Cumberland, Lancaster, Lebanon,
and York Counties.
