A Goose Feast

ended, school started, rents and other payments became
due. and you paid your servants and gave them winter
clothes Even Shakespeare uses Michaelmas as a point of ref
erence in Henry IV (and The Merry Wives of Windsor).
Michaelmas Eve, September 28, was described as an evening
of family games and fun A tradition of eating the
Michaelmas goose is still alive in northern Europe since
geese are plump and ready to eat this time of year The goose
was usually stuffed with potatoes to cut the grease and served
with a creamy onion sauce An old saying insisted that “if you
eat goose on Michaelmas Day, you never want money all the
year round "

After cooking something
smelly, like fish, just stick a
whole, unpeeled lemon in a
300° F oven tor 15 minutes

some of your herbs and spices
instead of commercial sprays.
Sprinkle some cloves, nutmeg,
or ginger on the floor before
vacuuming, or put some sprigs
of fresh herbs in your oven
after you are done roasting or
cooking Put some cinnamon
sticks and cloves in boiling
water and let simmer for a few
minutes
