Team Makes
Strong Showing
UNIVERSITY
PARK (Centre Co.)
The Penn State Lives
tock Judging Team
made a strong showing
at the Eastern States
Exposition Livestock
Judging Contest in
West Springfield, Mas
sachusetts, last Satur
day. Following only
three weeks of practice
and a pre-contest work
out that included stops
at Dunwalke Farm
(Polled Hereford and
Gelbvieh cattle) in Far
Hills, New Jersey, Hud
son Pines Farm (Sim
mental cattle) in Tarry
town, New York, and
Rally Farms (Angus
cattle) and Northview
Farm (Suffolk sheep) in
Millbrook, New York,
the team was prepared
for competition.
The Penn State team
garnered second in
sheep and then out
scored Virginia Tech,
Delaware Valley Col
lege, and West Virginia
in beef cattle and swine
to win those divisions
and finish first as a team
overall.
In individual catego
ries, Penn State team
members enjoyed suc
cess and finished with
several noteworthy
placings. Dave Elkin,
an Agricultural Engi
neering major from
Marion Center, Indiana
County, had a good day.
Dave was high indivi
dual in sheep, second in
swine, fifth in beef
cattle, third in oral rea
sons, and finished as the
high individual overall
in the contest.
Leigh Ann Brown, a
Dairy and Animal Sci
ence major from Not
tingham, Chester Coun
ty, finished fourth in
beef cattle and swine
judging, seventh in oral
reasons and third over
all. George McQuiston,
another Dairy and Ani
mal Science major,
from Harrisville, Ven
ango County, finished
as high individual in
swine judging, eighth in
oral reasons and fifth
overall. Lori Cash, an
Elementary Education
major from Centre Hall,
Centre County, was
high individual in beef
cattle and oral reasons,
and finished seventh
overall. Bob Leslie, a
Diary and Animal Sci
ence major from New
Castle, Lawrence Coun
ty, also contributed to
die team’s success, fin
ishing eleventh in the
contest with consistent
placings and oral
reasons.
The next two contests
for the Penn State
Livestock Judging
Team are at the Eastern
National Livestock
Show in Timonium,
Maryland, today and at
the Keystone Interna
tional Livestock Expos
ition (KILE) next week
in Harrisburg.
