Food Is A Good Buy The University of Minnesota recently released information about food expenditures by fami lies and individuals in the United States and in other countries. Food expenditures as a share of disposable personal United States income decreased from 22.1% in 1949 to 11.8% in 1990. The largest decrease was in money spent for food consumed at home, which decreased from 18% to 7.3%. Percent of income spent for food consumed away from home increased from 4% in 1949 to 4.5% in 1990.
