Drying was another obstacle
hat Rothman faced. It takes
nonlhs if the figurine is left to air
Iry, but if dried too quickly in a
icatcd area, the figurines will
; rack or burn. Through trial and
; rror, Rothman has perfected a
;ontrolled time element, which
fries the figurines in about 10
days.
When dry, the figurines have a
stonehke appearance in muted
shades of brown and gray.
“It’s safe, natural, organic, and
biodegradeable the finest fertil
izer available,” Rothman said as he
held up a completed PooPet.
To some people, making man
ure figurines sounds like a smelly
process, but Rothman points out
that making bricks from manure
has been done since time memor
ial, His figurines have the same
qualities as weatherproof bricks.
They are nonporous and will last
for years.
Currently, Rothman rents a bam

Hand, where he works when he is
in the area. He has several people

form the PooPets. Rothman pro
vides prepared manure. He pays an
average of 75 cents for each com
pleted PooPet.
“With experience, a person can
earn $9 to $l2 an hour," Rothman
said.
At this point, Rothman has no
limit on the amount of figurines
that employees can make.
“We are hopefully in an explo
sive growth phase,” said Rothman,
who recently relumed from the
International Gift Fair held in New
York. From that contact, he said
that he received orders for thou
sands of dollars of figurines. Spe
cial requests came for manure
made armadillos for Texas and
alligators for Florida.
“Cost factors roust be taken into
account,” Rothman said. “Larger
pieces are much more difficult to
dry and have a tendency to break
during the process.”
But Rothman is optimistic. If
network marketing continues to be
successful, he expects to buy a
building in the county and go to a
production line assembly.
“When people see the figurines,
they want them. The key to making
them desirable is to give the
PooPets expression. The figurines
need pizazz—something that says
‘l’m cute.’”

Ask The
Last year my canned corn
lacked flavor and was browner
than usual. How can I avoid this?
Answer: Assuming that you
followed proper canning proce
dures such as hot packing and
processing in a pressure canner
for the recommended period of
time, and started with corn at its
peak of flavor, it is probably due
to the variety of corn you
canned. Many of the newer,
sweeter varieties are not the best
to can since they have a higher
sugar content and tend to turn
brown and lose their flavor
when canned.
since Rothman had the idea for
marketing manure figurines.
Although it is a much more com
plicated process than Rothman
originally envisioned, he said,
“We defined the technology and
solved the problems in producing
the figurines. The key now is
distribution.”
Rothman continues to dream.
He said, “Our next step is to bio
logically alter the cattle to leave
finished figurines in the field.”

Master Food Preserver
Is it all right to can meat in a
thicker gravy rather than water?
Answer: No, we do not recom
mend canning meats in gravy
since they heat more slowly and
unevenly and the result is
inadequate processing. It could
definitely result in food spoilage
and a risk to your family.
Whom can I call when I have a
canning question?
