Michele and Steve Pavelski
were the winners in two out of
three of the age groups who parti
cipated in the recent Youth Judg
ing Contest at the Harford Fair
Grounds.
The third first place winner was
Justin Gamer.
The competition was organized
by Nick Place, county extension
director, Gere Reed, 4-H coor
dinator, and the Extension staff.
Three classes with four dairy
animals per group, were evaluated
by the contestants. The classes
were Jersey 2-year-old cows; Hol
stein 2-year-old cows; and Hol
stein intermediate heifer calves.
In addition to placing the ani
mals correctly, each of the young
judges was required to answer two
questions pertaining to the dairy
industry. Since the participants
were divided by age grouping, the
questions varied for each of the
age groups.
There were seven entries in
each of (he age groups. The sen
iors were from 15 to 19 years of

Susquehanna Youth Judge Dairy Animals
age, the intermediate group was
from 11 to 14 years old, and the
junior group was comprised of
youngsters 10 years old and
younger. Although sponsored by
the 4-H, any county boy or girl
was eligible to enter the judging.
Michele Pavelski took first
place in the senior judging. She is
the daughter of Joe and Sandra
Pavelski, of Uniondale, and is a
member of the North Jackson Ag
Club.
Second place was won by Josh
ua Harvatine, whose parents are
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Harvatine, of
Thompson. Third place was
awarded to Matthew, son of Mr.
and Mrs. James Curley, Irish Hill.
Harvatine is also a member of the
North Jackson 4-H, while Curley
belongs to the Irish Hill Club.
In the intermediate age group,
Steve Pavelski, brother of the sen
ior winner, came out in first place.
Second was Ryan Sprout, son of
Preston and Valerie Sprout, of
Montrose, and a member of the
DES (Dimock-Elk Lake-Spring
ville) 4-H Club. Third place was
won by Mike Hubbard, whose
parents are Gene and Denise Hub-

that the $755 million in emergen
cy funds for agricultural disasters
announced by President Bush can
apply to program crop losses
incurred in 1990, 1991, and 1992.
This is in addition to the $995

bom in Wisconsin, where she was
raised on a Holstein dairy farm.
She is a graduate of the University
of Wisconsin, where she majored
in dairy science. During her un
dergraduate years she was a mem
ber of the University’s dairy judg
ing team.

ing in Susquehanna County. She

the participants various hints on
how cattle should be fitted for
show.

ond place contestants were pre
sented with a lead line. The third
prize for the young people was a
livestock brush. The awards were
presented by Sire Power.

any of those years, they may not
receive further assistance for that
crop year.
Madigan said producers intend
ing to file for assistance should
begin to assemble their records
now, so they will be ready when
the official application period

county Agricultural Stabilization
and Conservation Service office
for additional information.
