Tioga County Cows Take Home Awards At Northeast Holstein Show
CJ. BOUGHTALING
Tioga Co. Correspondent
TROY (Bradford Co.)
Esbem Mark Corinne Connie, a
4-year-old, took four champion
awards at the Northeast Pennsyl
vania Holstein Champion Show
held here much to the surprise and
delight of Olivia Courtney.
As the 13-year-old daughter of
Harld and Sherry Courtney of
Mansfield led her cow through
each class it qualified for. her eyes
widened and her smile broadened
with each blue ribbon the bovine
earned.
Placing the cow first in both the
open and junior 4-year-old class.
Judge John Beerwort of Knowl
ton, Quebec, Canada, said Esbem
Mark Corinne Connie simply
overpowered the rest of the ani
mals in her class. She showed bet
ter angularity, good dairyness, and
since he liked the height and width
of the udder, Courtney’s cow was
named best udder in her class.
These were also the same rea
sons the judge awarded the animal
senior champion, youth senior
champion, grand champion, and
youth grand champion. In the
grand champion division, howev
er, Beerwort siad that he throught
the cow’s teats were nicer placed
than those of the other contenders.
Esbcm Mark Corinne Connie,
sired by Walkway Chief Marie,
was bom Nov. 21, 1987. Breeder
Bernard G. Courtney had chosen
Esbem Dandy Etta Corinne as her
dam.
Earning blue ribbons is nothing
new for Courtney nor her cow,
Connie. First shown by Leroy
Fiance as a senior calf at the
Northeast Holstein Champion
Show, the animal won first place.
This year at the Tioga County
Fair, Courtney’s cow took first in
her class, senior champion and
grand champion.
The pair plan to attend the State
Open Show at Penn State Sept. 11
and the 4-H Show in Harrisburg
Sept 22.
Reserve grand and senior
champion went to Gordon and
Dorothy Wood’s Gor-Wood-D
HM Eureka. The animal also
placed first in the senior 3-year
old class. Naming her best udder
for her class, Beerwort said he
liked the overall balance of the
animal and the height and width of
her udder.
Gordon Wood of Mansfield
also received the premier breeder
and premier exhibitor awards for

place awards that went to Wood
were dam and daughter class for
Gor-Wood-D Valiant Racqette, a
6-year-old, and her daughter, Gor-
Wood-D Jeffery Riunite, a 3-year
old. Riunite took first in the junior
3-year-old class and was named
best udder. The judge commented
on how much be liked her through
the neck and shoulders and
thought her lines were cleaner.
In the six years and over class,
Wood’s Gor-Wood-D Warden
Fond Memory earned a first place
because, according to Beerwort,
"She has too much style, balance,
and scale compared to the others
in the class... And she walks on a
real good set of legs.”
Another product of Gordon and
Dorthy Wools, Gor-Wood-D Star
B Splendor took first in the senior
2-year-old class.
Commenting on his reasons for
choosing her over the others,
Beerwort said, "She has more
front end and width of chest.” He
also liked the way her neck comes
out and the shoulders set nicer.
A red Holstein, Gor-Wood-D
Rhythm Maiden Red, took first in
the dry cow 4-year-and-under
class, because the judge said he
liked her front end. In height and
width, she overpowerd the cow
coming in second.
In the dary cow S-year-and
over class. Wood’s Gor-Wood-D
Jet Rona placed first “This cow
walks with style,” said Beerwort.
“I like the quality of the bone in
the rear leg.”
The Gor-Wood-D farm also
took the first place ribbon in the
best three senior females class.
A milker in the 100,000-pound
class was named youth reserve
grand champion as well as youth
senior champion. Jeremy Braund
of Troy owns the animal, which
placed first in both the junior and
senior divisions of the 100,000-
pound class.
Beerwort said of Braund Valley
Valiant Charm that he liked the
height and width of her udder and
noted that she walks out easier
than other animals in her class.
