For the second year in a row, Jason
Krall and sister Stacy won the top
awards at the recent southeast Pen
nsylvania Hog Derby.
Jason, 17, son of Glenn and Lin
da Krall, Lebanon, picked up
champion rate of gain at the derby
with an overall pounds lean gain of
.955. Jason has been showing in
the county 4-H swine club for nine
years. Jason’s sister, Stacy, 14,
won reserve grand champion car
cass with a pounds lean gain of
.924. She has been showing six
years.
In last year’s competition, Stacy
won champion overall entry in the
competition, and her brother won
champion in daily gain.
Sarah Boy topped reserve over
all champion with her entry, show
ing a pounds lean gain of .944.
Much of the help included reai
time ultrasound measurements
conducted by technician Mike
Cherchuck, Carlisle.
“This program provides a real
educational opportunity for kids,’’
said Ken Winebark, Lebanon
livestock agent. The experience
provides the4-H’ers with a chance
to associate production aspects of
raising swine with rate-of-gain in
showing livestock.
Winebark said the derby, now in
its second year, uses the National
Pork Producers Council for gain
per day on test. The hogs are also
shown on foot and evaluated live.
Measurements on the livestock are
taken, including backfat, loin eye,
and other measurements. The hogs
are taken to slaughter, and carcass
evaluations are made, including
length, loin eye, and other
evaluations.
The two-day event including a
show and evaluation by a panel of
three judges, including Doug Cle
mens, Hatfield Quality Meats;
Henry Holloway, a Hampshire and
Yorkshire breeder from Maryland;
and Bob Mikesell, swine feed spe
cialist from White Oak Mills. The
second day involved the carcass
evaluation and quality meeting.
The individual scores were com
bined and a mean score determined
champion individuals, according
to Winebark.
The derby included nine coun
ties from southeast Pennsylvania.
According to Winebark, there
were 51 exhibitors, up nearly 20
from last year, making this year the
biggest so far.
Of the number of entries, 18
were from Lebanon, the. host
county.
