MEYERSDALE (Somerset
Co.) It was a long and grueling
day of work for some 105 FFA
and 4-H club members at the
county fair’s Junior Livestock
Show given the hot August weath
er. With sweaty bodies, unkempt
hair and splotched white clothes
resulting from about seven or
more hours of showing their
bovine, they performed like troop
ers, masking their “udder”
weariness.
When it was over, Philka Pete
Cavalier Vicky was the supreme
champion, but owner Suzy Stutz
man, 17, Friedens, could only
think about a good shower and
some shut-eye following a previ
ous night’s rest of only two and a
half houis.
Bom December 12, 1987, Vic
ky’s breeder was Phillip D.
Laughman from Thomasville. Her
sire and dam were Straight-Pine
Elevation Pete and Rock-Maple
Cavalier Violet Red.
Stutzman, the daughter of Mike
and Barbara Stutzman, has two
younger sisters who are also
active dairy show participants.
She belongs to the Milkdrops 4-H
Club.
Kirsten Miller’s three-year-old
cow, Quaker-Farm Astrojet Sue
Ellen was named reserve grand
champion. Bom on Dec. 14,1988,
Ellen’s breeder was Clarence
Mark Miller, Boswell. Ellen’s sire
and dam were Bridon Astro Jet
and Quaker-Farm Power Pac Miss
Elly.

At Somerset Fair

MEYERSDALE (Somerset
Co.) Fourteen-year-old Chris
Schmuck of Rockwood knew his
1,215 pound Chianina market
steer had a good chance for the
grand champion honor, but still
kept his elation low-key when it
happened. For the proud teenager
it was a new experience needing
time for adjustment.
Schmuck, the son of Ron and
Linda Schmuck, has three sisters
and a brother, all of whom live on
Deer Run Farm, aptly dubbed for
the profuse number of graceful
whitetailed deer parading over the
250 beef-farming acres.
Besides his steer, Schmuck, a
member of the High Ridge 4-H
Club, brought both rabbits and
White Leghorn chickens to the
county fair which took blue rib
bons in their class.
Kevin Stahl showed the reserve
grand champion, a bitter sweet
victory for the 18-year-old from

Somerset. It marked the fifth time
that his steer got the reserve grand
champion title and the fourth suc
cessive year it happened. But
grand champions have always
remained elusive for Stahl’s well
cared for steers.
Despite their happiness, Robert
and Doris Stahl, like their son, felt
the poignancy of the moment
when the final announcement
came that “Buck,” a Chi/Angus
Cross weighing 1,225 pounds, like
his predecessors, was Reserve
Grand Champion.
Dan Ferko, 18, of Central City
showed the County-bred champ
ion with his 1,335 pound Angus
Cross. Placing as the County-bred
reserve champion was the
1,235-pound Limousin steer
shown by Lindsay Schmuck of
Rockwood.
