ELIZABETHTOWN (Lancas
ter Co.) You know the saying,
“once in a blue moon.”
As in. “once in a blue moon,
one family can sweep a showman
ship championship.”
Or, “once in a blue moon, a
record number of hogs will be
shown at the Elizabethtown Fair.”
Well, the moon may not have
been blue, but some happy sur
prises took place at the fair late
Tuesday evening, when the Becker
family Amy, Melissa, and
Karen—won first place in each of
the showmanship divisions at the
hog show.
The event is capped by the fact
that this is the eldest Becker’s
(Karen, 18, daughterof Marlin and
Nancy Becker) last year in 4-H.
Karen, the Lancaster County 4-H
swine showmanship champion
this year, will be showing hogs for
the last time at the Manheim Farm
Show in October.
Judge Cheryl Fairbaim, Chester
County livestock agent, said she
didn’t know the winners were sis
ters, and was surprised. But she
commented on the excellent eye
contact and marveled at “the
intensity of the kids. They’re really
into it, they really want to win.”
For the record number of hogs
shown (149), a first-time market
hog championship went to Kevin
Pfautz, for his 246-pound Class 2
heavyweight Hampshire cross gilt.
Kevin, 10, son of Rick and Sue
P r
Sarah Boyd, 11, right, showed the reserve grand champ
ion 246-pound hog. Cheryl Fairbalrn, Chester County agent,
judged the show.

the Lancaster 4-H Swine Club for
two years, Kevin said he “tried
really hard” and had a lot of help
from his family, including brother
Cory, 14, who won several county
champions.
Sarah Boyd showed the reserve
grand champion 246-pound hog.
Sarah, 11, daughter of Kerry and
Deb Boyd of Ephrata, said the
show was her third Elizabethtown
championship. She is,in the sixth
grade at Clay Elementary and has
been showing for three years.
In all, there were a total of 149
entries entered in the contest,
including 45 .exhibitors in 18 clas
ses, which the fair claims is about
30 percent bigger than last year’s
show. “We think that this is the
most that ever entered E-town,”
said Tony Folker, 4-H swine lead
er, and show announcer. “This
show has grown, and it is truly one
of the good ortes in the county.”
