despite his years, in this very
demanding profession.”
To expand his operation. Funk
generated the finances necessary
to purchase farming equipment.
An industrious individual, he
stretched his buying power by
purchasing raw materials and
manufacturing his own equip
ment. Funk put his agricultural
mechanics skills to work design
ing sprayers and irrigation sys
tems for his operation. He also
designed irrigation systems to
improve crop yield and quality on
some of drought-stricken
cropland.
The Amalgamated Sugar Com
pany has rewarded Funk for his
production of quality sugar beets
by increasing his contracted
acreage. He diversified his opera
tion by contracting with J.R.
Simplot to grow potatoes. These
contracted crops provide the
financial base for him to expand
and progress. To supplement his
crop income. Funk does custom
work for neighboring farmers.
Funk contributes his success to
the things he learned in FFA. “I
have enjoyed the opportunities
that have come through the FFA.
Serving as a chapter leader has
helped me understand the need for
agricultural leadership in our
country.”
Funk wants to help young peo
ple develop an appreciation for
agriculture and what it has to
offer. He is working to re
establish an FFA alumni affiliate
for his local chapter. “I hope my
efforts in activating an alumni
affiliate will be my first step in
accepting an agricultural leader
ship role in my community and
state,” said Funk.
A member of the Burley FFA
Chapter, Funk graduated from
Burley High School in 1991. He
and his wife, Cara, reside in Bur
ley, Idaho. His FFA advisor is
Gaylen Smyer. Darren is the son
of Gene and Sharon Funk.
Lake Eastern Region Star
Brian Lake runs the largest
spotted swine breeding operation
in Pennsylvania. An emerging
leader in the purebred swine
industry, Lake was recently
named 1992 Eastern Region Star
Farmer by the National FFA
Organization.
Lake, 21, bought his first regis
tered spotted gilt when he was 12
years old. In the last nine years,
his herd has grown to 300 head of
spotted swine breeding stock and
has produced close to 20 grand
champions.
As the swine operation began to
grow, Lake became good friends
with other swine breeders in the
coutnry. He developed an interest
in artificial insemination and
eventually started designing a
boar stud semen line to enhance
breeding capabilities.
With the help of an established
breeder in Ohio, Lake is develop
ing a line of prominent boars for
semen collection. This effort is the
first of its type in the eastern
United States. Lake plans to make
the semen available to commercial
and purebred breeders.
“1 feel the artificial insemina
tion concept for swine has as
much potential as it did for the
dairy industry,” said Lake. “Some
of the opportunities, such as mini
mizing the cost of breeding stock,
minimizing disease transmission
and maximizing profits, are
obvious.”
Lake plans to continue his
swine breeding business and test
the artificial insemination market
He hopes to begin raising feeder
pigs in the near future to add extra
income to his swine operation.
Lake credits much of his suc
cess to involvement in FFA. “My
FFA advisor, Edwin Layton, was
always very supportive and gave
