A26-Lanoister Farming, Saturday, August 15, 1992 Lyttle-Hyll Farm Hosts Lebanon Holstein Club VERNON ACHENBACH JR. Lancaster Farming Staff MT. ZION (Lebanon Co.) About 300 people attended a Lebanon County Hols tein Club family night at the Lyttle-HiU Farm near Ml Zion Thursday night. In addition to socializing, judg ing cattle, and touring the farm owned by Jim and Billie Hill, the crowd listened to Ron Wood, of Gor-Wood-D Acres, Mansfield. Ron is the son of Gordon and Dorothy Wood, owners of Gor- Wood-D Acres, and is heavily involved in the operations and decisions. The family is known for breeding a large number of Excel lent cows over the years and have had owned dozens of Excellents at one time. Wood said that their strategy and philosophy is that everyone in dairy production is a “com mercial dairyman.” “I hate that word,” he said. “We strive for an Excellent cow that makes 30,000 pounds (of milk) and still can go on to more 100,000 (pounds) or more (dur ing a lifetime,” he said. “You have to look at cows as individuals,” he said, adding that he has purchased many three teated registered cows which otherwise were structurally sound, and then worked with them to breed for a better- udder, for production. He said that even though the sale price for registered and grade animals is not that much different at some sales, the registration and tracked pedigree offer an advantage in that the offspring can be pre dicted and the herd improved. According to Ron, “We’ve been quite lucky at Gor-Wood-D. Ele vation has helped establish the line,” he said then, added that Star buck and Jerry (similar to Bell) have helped bring the strong pro duction and larger stature. As far as stature, however, he said that from 56 inches to 60 inches is tall enough. “Where we differ (with regular breeding programs) is that once we have bred for 30,000 pounds, we can then afford the luxury of breed to correct specific things.
