MANHEIM (Lancaster Co.) Although prices
of hogs have dropped in the past year, determination
abounds, especially in 4-H championship drives.
Ryan Donough was determined to win big with
“Shirley,” his 248-pound York/Hampshire gilt,
chosen as champion heavyweight hog on Wednes
day night at the Lancaster County 4-H Hog Show
and Sale. The grand champion sold to Hatfield
Quality Meats for $2 a pound (lower than last year’s
price of $2.50 a pound) for a total of $496.
Ryan, 8, son of Ed and Laßue Donough, Man
heim, is a first-year 4-H’er. Ryan attends Sporting
Hill Elementary School, and this is his first
championship.
Ed Donough said his son’s hog was obtained
from Harry Weaver’s farm in New Holland.
Determination took over for Ryan, who also sea
led the reserve championship with “Ice,” a
234-pound medium weight champion, sold to Stolt
zfus Meats, Intercourse, for $ 1.10 a pound (a total of
$257.40).
“I was just determined to do it,” said Karen
Becker, 18, Manheim, who won champion show
man for the first time. She has been showing hogs in
4-H for nine years. She is the daughter of Marlin and
Nancy Becker, Manheim.
Reserve champion showman. Brad Wagner, 19,
has been showing for seven years. This was also his
first showman championship. The son of John and
Joyce Wagner, Manheim, and a 1991 graduate of
Manheim Central H.S., Brad is studying accounting
at Messiah College.
There were a total of 117 hogs at the show, the
fifth sale for the county swine club and the seventh
year the show has been at Manheim, according to
Chet Hughes, swine club adviser. There were 13
car Cass hogs for the show and a total of 48
exhibitors.
Judge for the show was Keith Bryan, Penn State
instructor of dairy and animal science.
Following is a list of show placings.
