Summerville, maintains about 105 acres of corn, 30 acres of oats (for hay
making), 80 acres of alfalfa, and 125 acres of mixed hay (all baled).

Betsy Long believes that Stephen, her son, Is a lucky man, ever since his
complete recovery from a 4-wheeler accident that gave him a broken neck.
“The doctor said his life was spared,” she said. The accident, though
traumatic, has not impared the operation of Marlon Farm. In 1989, Stephen’s
father, Darwin, died, and his mother said she is proud of her son for taking
over the farm operation. “Stephen’s an exceptional boy,” she said. “His
ambition and his go-for-it attitude keep us going.” Stephen, 23, together with
fiancee Cindy Gray, farm 92 out of 208 acres In Mifflin and rent an additional
50 acres. Milking for the 55 registered and grade Holstein is twice a day from
tlestall to pipeline, and the herd Includes an additional 30 young stock. The
farm, about 50 years old, has been a beef cattle operation and switched to all
dairy in 1972. The Longs also are assisted by Ronald Stover, who works full
time.
