It is non-competitive as each animal is measured against standard for the breed rather than other animals at the show or the commercial ideal. Among the many exciting events at the 1992 Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival was a demonstration of card grading, an alternative meth od of evaluating breeding stock. The American Mina* Breeds Conservancy sponsored the de monstration to evaluate groups of sheep representing five minor breeds - Cotswold, English Lei cester, Clun Forest, Jacob, and Shetlands. Each animal is examined by three breed specialists using the breed standaid to evaluate each animal. Animals are not compared with pen mates or neighbors. A verbal or written report is provided by the evaluators and a colored card is attached to the ani mal or pen which designates its quality as a breeding animal: Blue - Excellent breeding stock; Red - Good; Yellow - Acceptable: White - Unacceptable for breed ing. Unacceptable animals are those which do not conform to the breed standard or are suffering from genetic or physical unsoundness. These animals are excused from the show and should not be used for breeding or sold as breeding stock. Northwest of Schaefferslown (717) 949-3860 pressure exists among breeders of show stock to select for character istics favoring success in the show ring. This selection can lead to de creased genetic diversity and even away from soundness and pro ductivity. The American Minor Breeds Conservancy is an organization of over 4,000 members promoting rare and endangered breeds of livestock and the genetic diversity these breeds represent. AMBC is promoting card grad ing, says Bixby, because many judges in the show ring are un familiar with rare breeds and therefore evaluate them using the same criteria as for popular com mercial breeds.
