D6-Uncwf»r Farming Saturday, May 23, 1992 UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre Co.) Surveys conducted at recent pesticide training confer ences indicate that certified pesti cide applicators in Pennsylvania are growing more concerned about using agricultural chemicals safe ly, said a safety expert in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences. The Agricultural Chemical Safety Compliance Conferences, held in Gettysburg, Butler, and Kennett Square during February and March, were attended by 451 pesticide applicators. Each parti cipant was eligible for at least six pesticide update credits, necessary to maintain a'pesticide applicator license. Participants were asked about their pesticide safely attitudes and practices, including whether they would have attended the meetings if no pesticide certification credits were offered. “More than 60 percent of the respondents said they would have attended the safety conferences even without the credits,” said Sam Steel, senior research associ ate in agricultural and biological RYAN KNOWS RHINO "Some things tougher than SERVIS-RHINO equipment is a tough, top-quality line that has evolved from some 60 years of business and product development. At SERVIS-RHINO we benefit Pesticide Users More Concerned About Safety engineering and director of the Pennsylvania Agricultural Safety Council, which sponsored the conferences. “This is a tremendous change from 20 years ago, when certifica tion was first mandated,” said Steel. “Then, applicators came to conferences because they had no choice. Now they come because they are concerned about using chemicals safely.” When asked about their know ledge of pesticide labels, only 4 percent of conference attendees believed that their understanding level was deficient. “That’s good news,” Steel said. “However, a question on recogniz ing pesticide poisoning symptoms did raise concern. Almost one third of the respondents acknow ledged that they may have difficul ty recognizing poisoning symp toms. If something happens in the field, applicators need to identify symptoms quickly. It could mean the difference between life or death.” Steel and conference evaluator Dr. Joe Miller, associate professor of health education at Penn State, also asked conference participants about their use of personal protec tive equipment. “Although S 3 percent reported that they ‘always’ usq some form of protective gear, another 40 per cent said they use it ‘sometimes’ or ‘never,’” Steel said. “That’s too high. Because of the corporate hold ings, agriculture officials said an increase in foreign ownership from one year to another does not neces sarily represent land newly acquired by foreigners. Nor do the numbers necessarily represent ownership exclusively by foreigners. According to the report, a U.S. firm’s landholdings can show up as foreign-owned one year, but not another, as the firm’s stock passes in and out of foreign hands. The land, however, is still owned by the See The Servis-Rhino Dealer Nearest Tou: BULL INTERNATIONAL Washington, PA ' (412) 222 0450 ERB & HENRY EQUIP.
