Most of us look for better ways to accomplish tasks, regardless of
our occupations. We attempt to identify better ways of doing
things, in order to make our tasks simpler, or to accomplish them
more efficiently or effectively.
Suppose you decide to do something differently on your dairy to
improve the efficiency of your operation. What would that be? Use
the “weakest link” approach. Identify the factor that is most
limiting your efficiency.
Local dairy producers have identified the most limiting factors
affecting efficiencies of their operations. Can you identify any of
these problems on your farm?
FACTORS MOST LIKELY TO LIMIT DAIRY EFFICIENCY:
- ignoring importance of a good ration for dry cows
- light-weight first lactation heifers
- limited bunk space or hay rack space
- hoof problems
- low energy rations for fresh cows
- poor heat detection routine
- forage changes (type, quality, moisture, etc.)
