Five To Vie For

LEESPORT (Berks Co.)
There’s been a lot of excitement in
Berks County this week in antici-
pation of the Dairy Princess
pageant tonight at 8 here in the
Agricultural Center auditorium.
“This is first time in a few years
that we’ve had several contes
tants,” said Robin Phillips, one of
several people helping coordinate
the event, sponsored by the Berks
County Dairy Farmers
Association.
Last year’s dairy princess, Kelly
Gelsinger of Womelsdorf, was the
only one to compete for the honor.
She and Rachel Hartman, 6. of
Hamburg and the Little Miss Dairy
Princess, will turn over their
crowns to new princesses after the
presentations.

Co.) — The Pennsylvania Depart
ment of Agriculture is seeking
board member nominations for
several commodity promotion
programs.
The commodity programs
include Sheep and Lamb Market
ing, Apple Marketing, Vegetable
Marketing/Research, Peach and
Nectarine Research, and Potato
Research.
The boards have the authority
and responsibility to manage com
modity promotion programs and
to distribute funds.

Four contestants will vie for the
Little Miss title and five for the
main title.
They are as follows:
Tracey Lynn Borkey, Bemviile
R.D. 1, is a daughter of Franklin
and Bonnie Borkey Jr. She is a
senior at Hamburg Area High
School and works full-time on the
400-acre family farm. Of the 60
milking Holsteins in the herd, Tra
cey owns three. She is active in
FFA, 4-H, the Berks County Junior
Holstein Association, and the
Shartlesville Grange.
Sandra Gross, 16, is a daughter
of David and Marilyn Gross, Ham
burg R.D. 1. She attends Tulpe
hocken High School and wants to
study child psychology when she
attends college.
Currently a dairy ambassador.
Nominees must be active in the
production of the particular com
modity in Pennsylvania.
Those appointed to the boards
will serve three-year terms and are
expected to attend regular board
meetings and participate in other
related functions.
The deadline for submitting
nominations is May 22, 1992, for
terms that will begin on July 1,
1992. Nominees’ names and
addresses should be submitted to
the Pennsylvania Department of
Agriculture, Bureau of Market
Development, 2301 N. Cameron

Berks Dairy Princess Title
Sandra is involved in FFA, 4-H,
the Mohnville Church of the
Bretheien choir, and die Berks
County Junior Holstein Associa
tion. In addition to helping milk
the 50 Holsteins in the herd on the
350-acre farm, Sandra also babys
its. Twelve of the herd ate hers.
Carrie Lynn Hetrick is the
16-year-old daughter of Randall
and Cynthia Hetrick of Oley R.D.
2. After attending classes at Oley
Valley High School, she helps on
the4oo-acre family farm owned by
her grandfather, which milks 135
Holsteins, two of which she owns.
She is involved in FFA, New
Life Bible Fellowship youth
group, church choir, and the Oley
Valley Youth League Softball. She
is also a school library aide.
Sarah Johnson, 18, is the
daughter of Gerard and Jean John
son of Limekiln. She was gra
duated from Oley Valley High
School last year and studies agri
cultural economics and rural
sociology at the Pennsylvania
State University. She is involved
in the Dairy Science Club, the
Block and Bridle Club, the Junior
Jersey Cattle Club. 4-H, and she is
a soccer coach for the State Col
lege area youth soccer team.
Her 150-acre family farm is
home to five jerseys, two of which
she owns.
Rebbecca Ann Riegel, 18,
another current dairy ambassador,
is the daughter of Bruce and Flor
ence Riegel, Mohsrsville R.D. 1. A
1991 graduate of Schuylkill Valley
High School, she is studying horti
culture at the Pennsylvania State
University.
