    Doebler’s All Stars
GO WITH THE WINNERS THIS SPRING
by Ted Doebler
I'm Ted Doebler, with five proven performers
you can really depend on.
I named my first All Stars last
September based on their
1988-89-90 performances. And
the five hybrids didn't disap
point me last fall. They racked
up big numbers again in the
1991 trials.
Not that we didn't see some
solid challengers. Like Doebler's
newcomer 69XP that shelled out
191.9 bu. in an Augusta county,
VA strip test, and 187 bu. in
Berks county, PA.
And how about upstart 86XA2.
It combined 219.3 bu. at
McGaheysville, VA.
But the extremely dry weather
generally made much of our 1991
corn research hard to assess.
That's why I'm sticking with
my original five All Stars. These
hybrids made the team by shell
ing out big in droughty 1988,
wet 1989 and ''normal"
1990. These years gave
us the best and worst of
growing seasons. A sort
of obstacle course for
hybrids that's seldom
matched.
The computer did the
hard work, sifting
through thousands of
farm tests and research
trials from New York to
Virginia. Best five yields
of every hybrid were
totaled for each of the
three years. Then the
All Stars were selected
by averaging the top 15
yields.
How well did our All
Stars perform? Let's
look at the records.
How All Stars
run up yields
DOEBLER 84XP, 118 days.
Nothing but raves from
growers. Excellent disease
resistance. Great standup.
Superior drought rating. Top
15 average? 194.3 bu.
DOEBLER 75X, 113 days. Our
best seller. And no wonder.
Big ears. Sturdy stalks. And
PA's all time corn champ at
281.6 bu. 1990 best: 218.6 bu.
Top 15 average: 196.6 bu.
DOEBLER 66XP, 103 days.
Super vigor. Great standup.
Amazing yields for maturity.
Like Top 15 average of 196.5
bu. And 1990 best of 27.9 tons
silage, 5.4 tons TDN.
DOEBLER 45XP, 92 days.
Great stalks. Healthy. Top 15
average of 169.9 bu. In 1991,
45XP made 192.5 bu. in a
Rensselaer county, NY trial,
190.4 bu. at Madrid, NY.
DOEBLER 35XP, 83 days.
Sturdy stalks for sure. Scant
1% stalk loss in 1989 N.Y.
trials. Big yields, too. Top 15
average: 157.2 bu. 1991 best:
161.1 bu.
