PFA President Criticizes
Television Show
CAMP HILL (Cumberland
Co.) A statewide farm organi
zation leader recently criticized a
television program which stated
that the nation's milk supply is
unsafe to drink.
Keith W. Eckel, president of the
Pennsylvania Farmers' Associa
tion (PFA), said "milk quality is
stringently monitored by milk pro
cessors and state authorities”
across the nation.
A TV program. "In America"
which was aired on WNEP-TV,
Avoca, "was absolutely terrible."
Eckel wrote in a letter to Elden
Hale, WNEP-TV president.
"Dairymen deserve an apology for
poor judgement and (poor)
reporting.
"If a dairyman was shipping
'tainted' milk as alleged by the
show, he would soon be out of bus
iness, because it would cost the
average dairyman in Pennsylvania
more than $5,000 in penalties for
each offense.”
The farm leader explained how
milk sanitation is enforced: "Test
samples are taken at every farm

and random testing can be done on
any milk, picked up at the farm.
"Dairy farmers are aware of the
withdrawal period necessary when
medicating sick dairy animals.
Lactating cows are kept out of the
milk herd for at least 72-hours after
the last application of medication.
Many farmers use a leg band sys
tem to identify an animal on medi
cation. Many farmers report that
those animals are hand-milked and
the milk is dumped.
"Milk haulers agitate each milk
tank at the farm for IS minutes and
then take a sample from each tank
prior to pumping that farm's milk
into the bulk tank of the truck haul
ing it to a processing plant. "Upon
arriving at the plant, each bulk tank
is tested for all impurities. If any
questionable product is found,
then each sample collected at vari
ous farms is analyzed to determine
the type and source of residue.
This method helps to pinpoint the
source of contamination. That
farm is then 'penalized' the total
value of the milk contained in that
truck's tank.

"Federal law also stops all ship
ments from that farm for two days
at the farmer's expense. If the pro
ducer violates sanitation regula
tions the second time, he can't ship
for three days, plus the cost of a
tank load of milk. Repeated viola
tions would result in the dairy farm
losing its contract for milk pro
cessing," Eckel said.
