For the first time in history Jersey
herds have passed the
20.000-pound mark for DHIR herd
lactation average.
This list, recently released by
the American Jersey Cattle Club,
includes 79S herds which were
enrolled on DHIR or TPE in 1991.
Among these herds is Sunny
Day Farm, in Chester, S.C., which
topped the list for milk with an
average of 20,582 pounds. The
farm is owned by Herbert, Betty
and Herby Lutz.

N.Y., owned by Peggy Bennett
Rated by average Of protein pro
duction, the dozen Meri-Acres
Jerseys was top with 768 pounds.
The 40-head Sunny Day Farm
recorded an average 70S pounds of
protein.
On the other coast Russell
Dairy Farm, of Coquille, Oregon,
took high honors for having the
herd with the highest fat produc
tion. His 93-milking cows made an
average of 960 pounds of fat The
farm is owned by Wayne, Mary,
Tony and Marcella Russell.
Sunny Day Farm captured the
second spot with a 950-pound fat
production average.
The 1991 DHIR herd lactation
average list contained 11 Jersey
herds averaging more than 18,000
pounds of milk. Included was a
herd of 230 animals on test. Six
herds averaged more than 700
pounds of protein and three herds
PSU Product Judging Team Wins
UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre
Co.) — Seven College of Agricul
tural Sciences students practiced
evaluating six classes of dairy pro
ducts for eight weeks before parti
cipating in the Midwestern Reg
ional Contest with ten other teams.
When comparing evaluations of
milk with dairy industry official
judges, the three team members
from Penn State received the first
place trophy with the closest seme
for eight milk samples. Overall
they were sixth of the eleven
teams, led by Tammy Balthaser,
who was 14th high individual.
Other team members were: Aimee
Eopechino, Ruth Bicher and Dan
Berlin being the alternate.
Two weeks later the four team
members participated in the 70th
International Collegiate Dairy
Products Evaluation Contest with
sixteen other teams. After evaluat
ing eight samples each of cottage
cheese, Cheddar cheese, strawber
ry yogurt, milk, butter and vanilla
ice cream, they placed 13th of the

funds for purchasing hundreds of
samples for practicing, and costs
of two van trips to Chicago were
provided by Pennsylvania dairy
processing companies. The IS
week spring course included 30
sessions and coaches Sidney E.
Barnard, Professor of Food Sci
ence and Rodney A. Smeltz,
Senior Research Technologist had
more than 2S practice sessions in
the fall. The experience of the stu
dents helps ensure that the dairy
products you use are of good fla
vor, appearance, and body and
texture.
