MOHRSVILLE (Berks
Co.) The Pennsylvania Jersey
Cattle Club (PJCC) recently
announced its annual meeting and
calf sale, to be held April 10-11, in
Shartlesville, Berks County.
The convention and meetings
are to be held at the Haags Hotel in
Shartlesville, located west of
Reading, just off of 178. The sale is
to be held at Phillips’ Irish Creek
Jerseys farm in Mohrs ville.
Reservations must be made ear
ly. The meeting is to be centered in
Shartlesville, so organizers have
reserved a block of rooms at the
Fort Motel, directly off of 178.
Those attending must make their
own reservations directly with the
motel at (215) 488-1578.
Other accomodation recom
mendations include the Sheraton-
Berkshire in Reading (215)
376-3811, and the Comfort Inn in
Reading (215) 371-0500.
The sale committee is currently
searching the area for the most
stylish, top-pedigreed calves that
the state will offer this year. Plan to
attend with your child to select a
project animal for the upcoming
4-H season, or come to select
future herd replacements.
For catalogs, contact Robin
Phillips, R.D. #l, Box 94, Mohrs
ville, 19541-9610.
Planners encourage Jersey
enthusiasts and others to attend for
a variety of reasons, from solializ
ing with breeders of the Jersey
breed and leant more about the
efficient Jersey cow.
The area of the convention is
also the heartland of some of the
remaining Pennsylvania Dutch
(not Amish) culture, including
foods, shops and farm designs.
Shartlesville has antique shops,
crafts and “Roadsid America,” a
large, indoor model community
with tours and shows. Area farms
also are preparing for visits.
