Barbara Winfield’s Quilt Wins Best Of Show BETH WHITMAN PTTZER Cumberland Co. Correspondent Mechanicsburg (Cumberland Co.) Barbara Winfield was thrilled when the quilt she made took “Best of Show” at the Farm Show. She smiled as she said, “I was really pleased... It’s special to get recognition for something you’ve made.” The artistic pattern of rose and blue strips garnished with a flair of green makes it easy to see why this quilt was a winner. The worksmanship and stitches are equally as beautiful. Barbara has been sewing and quilting for years. In previous competition, Barbara had other people finish her quilts. This past year was the first time she did her own final stitching on the quilt she made for Farm Show competition. Barbara works full-time. She estimates that it takes six months to make one quilt She doesn’t use any special tools for her creations. She quilts on her lap, starting in the middle and working to the out side to keep it nice and flat Her dog lays on the end of the quilt while she is working on it Barbara has been fascinated by quilts since she was a small girl. She enjoys every step of the pro cess that goes into making each quilt. She especially likes working with the design, colors, and pay ing special attention to the work manship. When asked what some of her tips were for quilting, she said she is meticulous when she measures, sews, presses, and clips. r- L__J jQ _ 6 PIECE PINE LIVING ROOM Sofa, chair, rocker, 2 end Hp' tables and a party ottoman. Reg. Ret. $1089.95 She also found that her sewing and tailoring background helped teach her clipping, pressing, and stitch ing skills. All 100% cotton fabrics are used for the design and backing of all of her quilts. Barbara begins by prewashing all of the fabrics and has found it helpful to buy only brand name fabrics. She enjoys taking a trip to Lancaster once a year for the backing and fabrics. A bigger picture of Barbara Winfield shows a nurse at Mecha nicsburg Area Intermediate School for 14 years. She has four adult children and three grandsons whom have been gifted with quilts. The married children have each received a quilt as a wedding gift She’s hoping to be able to quilt for her first granddaughter in March. Barbara designed and quilted a beautifully detailed child’s quilt for her grandson Matthew last year. Coloring book shapes came to life as dozens of fabric appliques on a primary-colored pieced quilt She used a bike, dou ble bus. plane, train, balloon, and dairy truck as some of the shapes. The dairy truck has special signifi cance in her family as her husband works for a local dairy. A hobby that began as a child making doll-clothes has bloomed into a beautiful expression of col or and design. Barbara enjoys the artistic expression of quilt-making and finds it to be a wonderful way to relax. AREA RUGS 2’x4’ rugs In classic Persian and Oriental designs or Contemporary Patterns.
