RCMA Regroups
If you were wondering what would happen to RCMA after losing the
Rogers-Allen program in New York you should be happy to know that
they're alive and well after their annual meeting in Syracuse last month.
With the election of Lewis Gardner, president of Eastern Milk Produc
ers and now president of RCMA, and the re-election of all the other offic
ers, they're already making plans for ways to get higher milk prices for
northeastern producers.
Their move to Syracuse with a smaller staff and reduced space is only
to conserve their assets for future efforts for producers.
Carmen Ross, the executive director, will work on a per diem rate and
board meetings will be reduced to save money. Already a study commit
tee has been organized to develop a new program from their past experi
ence and one that all segments of the daily industry will support
They still face the court battle over compensatory payments but they
also have a number of options to consider that can be helpful.
It may be a matter of taking what you can get or settling for a half loaf if
you can't have it all but even in these months of rising milk supplies sell
ing for under order prices it should be comforting to know that RCMA is
preparing for action and the next opportunity.
PA Premium
The Pennsylvania Milk Marketing Board took testimony on the effect
of the drought on farmers last week.
Some groups asked for al5 cent increase and some for 20 but the Board
decided on 25 cents. This is in addition to the present premium of $1.05
which is in place until June 30. So it will be $1.30 on Class I milk pro
duced and processed in Pennsylvania from February to June.
Petitions have already been presented for hearings this spring to extend
the premium beyond June 30 just in case there's a need for it
