The recent addition of 25 cents to the minimum Pennsylva nia price of milk to producers is but one of several actions the Pennsyl vania Milk Marketing Board (PMMB) has taken during its exis tance to help the state’s dairy industry. According to its chairman, Don Lanius, and board members J. Robert Derry and Leon Wilkinson, the Pennsylvania Milk Marketing Board has played a vital role in assisting the Pennsylvania farmers in the last few years. The agency's Secretary O. Frank DeGarcia recently said that all three have been PMMB board members since September 1988, and have held several statewide hearings for drought relief as well as fuel cost adjustment to farmers. As a result, their actions yielded approximately $102,033,782, or, an averge of more than $7,800 for each Pennsylvania milk producer. A breakdown of the past actions of the PMMB reveals: • The base premium payment for Class I milk (drinkable-milk) of $1.05 since Sept. 18, 1988 to June 30, 1992, would yield approximately $95,000,000 to Pennsylvania dairy farmers. This action of the board resulted in an additional $4,140,000 in revenue back to Pennsylvania farmers. • Most recently, in January, the board held a statewide drought relief hearing. The results of the hearing were a 25-cent increase on top of the existing $1.05 for the remaining five months of the exist ing order. The Board's action will generate an additional $2,470,000 for dairy farmers. Agency’s Secretary DcGarcia said, “That while the PMMB, as a state agency, cannot solve all the problems facing our economy that is impacting on our Pennsylvania dairy fanners, the Board's past actions are efforts that have gone a long way toward curbing the dam age caused by weather and marked conditions. “This premium program is an addition to the numerous other board initiatives which ensure a stable market and a safe adequate supply of milk." »'■ ~ !>■ rut W( ttncaftf* Fuming. smxtov.
