Cindy Thoman:
Farm Women President
LOU ANN GOOD
Lancaster Farming Staff
LOYSVELLE (Perry Co.)
Although Cindy Thoman Of Perry
County lived in Lancaster County,
the most populous county for Farm
Women, it took a move to Perry
County before Cindy joined the
Farm Women organization.
Perry County has only one soci
ety with 11 members. It has the
smallest membership of the Socie
ty of Farm Women of Pennsylva
nia, which totals 3,371 members.
“We are really a close-knit
group and 1 hope the group con
tinues to make time to stay
together even thought we all live a
fast life,” Cindy said.
Unlike the group’s beginnings
when it was first organized in
1976, most members now hold
full-time jobs off the farm. Cindy,
herself, does not have an off-the
farm job, but she is busy. In addi
tion to working on the farm, Cindy
does sewing alterations in her
home.
The Perry County Farm Women
Society meets five times a year.
They hold their annual fundraiser
before Easter when they make 800
to 1,000 Easter eggs to sell. The
group also makes lap robes for
nursing homes. One of the mem
bers’ favorite meetings is when
each person brings a craft they
have made to the meeting. After
explaining how they made it,
members exchanged their projects
as presents with each other.
“We really would like new
members because we feel our
group plays an important part in
farm life,” Cindy said. Those inter
ested in joining the group, should
call Cindy at (717) 789-4242.
Cindy said that she and her hus
band, Jim, moved from Lancaster
County to Perry County because
they wanted to be on a larger farm.
They bought a 150-acre farm to
crop farm and raise beef “12
mamma, one poppa, and the
offspring,” according to Cindy.
The Thomans* sons Jay, 17, and
Dale, IS. help on the farm and are
on the school wrestling team,
which keeps Cindy busy going to
In the weeks ahead, Farm Women presidents from Pennsylvania will
be featured in this section. The Society of Farm Women of Pennsylvania
was founded October 14,1914. It’s purpose is to contribute to the pow
er and influence of the farm home; to contribute to the community
activity of farm women; to develop leadership and to promote better
living and working conditions in the farm homes of Pennsylvania. The
16 county societies have a state membership of 3,371.
