Cakes At Farm Show

Judges proclaimed Dolly
Longenecker from Elizabethtown
as the winner of the Greatest Coco
a Cake Contest.
Dolly, who is only 18-years-old,
baked a cake that topped 59 other
cakes at the Pennsylvania Farm
Show contest held on January 11 at
the Pennsylvania Farm Show. Her
heart-shaped cake was decorated
with chocolate roses that she
formed from the chocolate butler
cream frosting.
Since Dolly bakes cakes for
Bird In Hand Restaurant, she gets
plenty of practice, but the win was
still a shock to Dolly who said that
it was the first time that she had
competed against other adults. In
fact, Dolly had not bothered to take
off of work to attend the Farm
Show competition since she was
convinced that she wouldn’t win.
After Dolly learned of her win, she
regretted not having the opportuni
ty to receive her prize, a weekend
for two at Hershey, presented by
Secretary of Agriculture Boyd Wolff asked Shawn Getz of
Penryn when he tried to claim the blue ribbon for the cake
baked by Dolly Longenecker of Elizabethtown.
ty, January 18,
Secretary of Agriculture Boyd
Wolff.
Second place winner was Lor
raine Bannon, Waymart; and third
place went to Suzanne Virchick,
Union County West End Fair.
Cakes entered at the Pennsylva
nia Farm Show must be made from
the same recipe used by contes
tants who placed first in a local
fair. At the Elizabethtown Fair,
Dolly had entered in cake in the
youth division since she was only
17 years old at the time.
Dolly lives with her parents
Glen and Sharon Longenecker on a
117-acre Dairy of Distinction
farm. She helps with the 70 dairy
cows, pigs, steers, and a few
chickens.
This was the second year for the
contest sponsored t>y Hershey
Chocolate Company.
Five judges each picked the best
cake from a table of 12 cakes. The
five chosen cakes were then taste
tested by all five judges. The
judges were Lisa Kudela of Farm
Shine; Jane Herwig of Pennsylva
nia Magazine; Chris Fiscus of
WHP; Barbara Grass, home eco
nomist: Heath Edwards of Hershey
Entertainment.
