In the area of nutrition research,
the board decided to continue
administering this program
through the National Dairy
Council.
The board approved just over
$1.9 million for continued and new
research projects on subjects,
including the effects of dietary cal
cium on bone mineral in various
age segments, the use of dairy pro
ducts in dietary management and
the effects of dairy foods on vari
ous cancers, to name a few.
In a continuing effort to demon
strate the benefits of eating cul
tured dairy products for exam
ple, yogurt —to stimulate the
body's immune system, the board
approved two fesearch studies.
One of the studies will determine
whether yogurt eating in the elder
ly can enhance the benefits of a
vaccination, and the other will eva
luate yogurt's ability to prevent
recurring vaginitis in women.
To provide more supporting sci
entific data to the chocolate milk
campaign and other future product
campaigns, the board approved
$150,000 to fund research estab
lishing the anti-cavity potential of
dairy foods compared to other
foods used for snacking.
Export Enhancement
Although much of the board
meeting focussed on domestic
activities and research, the export

program was also a significant
item on the agenda.
The top item in export was the
board’s approval of plans to step
up promotion of value-added dairy
products in Mexico by establishing
local representation there.
Promotion activities will begin
with research to identify how Mex
ican consumers feel about U.S.
cheese, yogurt and ice cream.
Once die key benefits perceived
by those consumers are identified,
promotions based on those mes
sages will begin. NDB will also
work with U.S. exporters to pro
vide them with trade contacts in
Mexico as well as assist them in
developing marketing strategies.
Among its promodons, NDB
will sponsor a booth at a U.S. pro
ducts trade show in Mexico City
next year, fund a retail promodon
for yogurt, and host a cheese trade
seminar. NDB will put up $42,650
for the acdvides while USDA will
provide $60,500 through the Fore
ign Agriculture Service.
The Nadonal Dairy Promodon
and Research Board, composed of
36 dairy farmers, was established
by the Dairy and Tobacco Adjust
ment Act of 1983 to develop and
administer a coordinated program
of promodon, re-search and nutri
tion education to strengthen the
dairy industry's position in the
marketplace.
This effort is financed by Amer
ica' s dairy farmers.
