ALLENTOWN (Lehigh
Co.) Dairy farmers are to get
an opportunity to hear from own
ers of some of the best producing
dairy herds in Maryland, New
York and Ohio during the 1992
Pcnn-Jersey Dairy Expo, sche
duled to be held at two locations.
The Penn-Jersey Dairy Expo is a
dairy herd management and trade
show which is sponsored by the
county extension offices in New
Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Organizers have traditionally
offered seminars involving nation
al and internationally recognized
experts representing a variety of
views and opinions on subjects of
cuirent interest.
This year’s program is offered
either at the Days Inn Conference
Center in Allentown, on Jan. 8, or
at the Oxford Fire Hall in Oxford,
on Jan. 9.
Scheduled to start the day-long
seminar (from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.)
is Robert Yonkers, Ph.D., a Penn
State University professor of agri
cultural economy. Yonkers is to
talk about the economic outlook
and management strategies.
Following Yonkers are to be
presentations by a three-man panel
of dairy producers from three
slates surrounding Pennsylvania
and New Jersey whose herds were
recently recognized by their
respective state Dairy Herd
Improvement associations
(DHIAs) as outstanding.
Speakers are to be Roy Crow
from Maryland, Ken Harrington of
New York, and James Lewis of
Ohio.
The afternoon session is feature
a report on parasite control from
Michael Sukhdeo, Ph.D., a parasi
tologist at Rutgers University, and
a look at seasonal milking by
Health Care Sciences
Institute of Harrisburg Area
Community College and
The Wellness Fund

Of the top dairy producers to be
part of the panel, their backrounds
and operations vary.
Roy and Sue Crow rent a
300-acre farm in Kennedyville,
Md., from Roy’s father. The cou
ple currently has a 48-head milk
ing string they milk three times a
day.
The Crows had the top rolling
herd average on Maryland herds
with 90 or fewer cows for 1990-91
production year. Recently they
sold 14 cows, but the larger herd
had averaged 24,160 pounds of
energy corrected milk (Maryland
DHIA corrects for fat content),
which correlates to an actual pro
duction of 23,868 pounds of milk,
859 pounds of fat and 727 pounds
of protein.
With the reduced herd, their
most recent production record
came in at 23,945 pounds.
Roy is a 1977 graduate of the
University of Maryland who
returned to the home farm, pur
chased 23 bred heifers from his

end rolling herd average was
16,000 pounds of milk.
The couple feeds com silage
before milking and alfalfa haylage
in an open bunker with free access
to pasture. Also, to slow passage,
Timothy hay is added
occassionally.
Top dressing is with grain or
with a manufactured pellet.
For those cows making more
than 100 pounds of milk per day,
and all first-calf heifers, get 5 -
pounds of a 25-percent protein pel
let that contains a rumen bypass fat
and undegradable protein. He sub
stitutes the pellet for grain on a
pound-for-pound basis.
They also have a 105.5 BAA,
1.8 services per conception with
43 percent first service concep
tions and a calving interval of 13.7
months.
