EVA MARTIN Maryland Correspondent ORLANDO, Fla.— The National Milk Producers Federa tion (NMPF) met in Orlando, Florida, this past week for their 75th Annual Meeting and Dairy Summit. The theme, “Continuing the Tradition,” was used through out the meetings to take a look at how far we have come and where we go from here. NMPF President James P. (Tom) Camerlo Jr., and NMPF CEO James C. Barr, welcomed more than 1,400 dairy farmers and co-op members from across the country in a joint opening message. Camerlo reflected when NMPF was getting its start prior to World War I, it took a dairy producer 3 hours and 40 minutes to produce 100 pounds of milk. Today it takes just 10 minutes. In those days vir tually all milk markets were local and communication was poor. ‘There was a need,” he said, “for a national organization to act as a clearing house for informa tion that would aid milk producers in bargaining for the best price for New Carburetor Compensating System Keeps Going, and Going, and Going ... i Easier Carburetor Adjustment with LED Display Available at these servicing dealers Ono ' SHUEY’S SALES & SERVICE JonMlmm M. 717-M5-4t15 Bechtelsvllle PASSMORE SERVICE CENTER, INC. The result was the formation on Feb. 16, 1916 of National Milk Producers Federa tion, an organization based on the cooperative principle that many dairy producers working together are definitely stronger than any one of us pursuing a goal alone.” Barr said, “A thread that runs through the history of the Federa tion... is unity. That concept is as valid today as it was three quarters of a century ago.” The recent defeat of dairy legis lation led President Camerlo to ask dairy producers to set realistic goals and remain united behind these goals. “We must abandon unrealistic pursuits, no matter how attractive... we need to abandon ideas that cannot succeed in favor of those that have a reasonable chance of success.” Camerlo continued by stating that, “During this meeting we will consider certain changes in the NMPF structure aimed at making the organization more representa tive and responsive to the needs of its members. The future of rur al America is on the line. Small town after small town is dying, he said. To support that warning, Camerlo said that a report recently on the CBS Evening News reported that for every seven dairy farmers that fail, another business in rural America goes belly up. “The future lies in balancing the needs of consumers and efficient milk producers of all sizes. Get ting to that future is going to .equire some tough, innovative, decisions,” Camerlo said. Barr urged members to forge a legislative game plan that would succeed early next year. “If we can agree on a politically realistic plan, and stick to it, we can pass legislation that will benefit both consumers and dairy farmers. If we cannot agree on a legislative solution that’s achievable, then let’s shift gears and find another means of securing a bright future for our industry. 20" Bar $819.95 *»««««< Maintain Peak Power & RPM CUIC - A Ignition 60 4 '* 4; f. * >; & "{ I *' Engine Power: 7.8 hp Tamaqua CHARLES s.
