    Crop Residues Topic
Of Tillage Conference
COLLEGE PARK, Md.
About 75 percent of farm conser
vation plans call for some form of
crop residue management in high
ly erodablc areas. So grain pro
ducers need to become fully aware
of what is required if they are to
meet the deadline for having their
conservation compliance plans
fully operational by Dec. 31,
1994. Meeting this deadline
insures continued eligibility for
participation in federal farm
programs.
An explanation of what is
required constitutes the keynote
address at this year’s Mid-Atlantic
Conservation Tillage Conference.
The speaker will be David L.
Schertz, national agronomist for
the Soil Conservation Service,
U.S. Department of Agriculture,
headquartered in Washington.
D.C. Schertz’s topic is “The Crop
Residue Management Challenge
-- It’s Role for American Agricul
ture in the 19905.”
The annual event is scheduled
December 18 in the Ramada Inn
and Convention Center at Hager
stown, Md. It will run from 8 a.m.
to 3 p.m. Nearly SOO crop farmers

without providing for ventilation of the pit, particularly
in buildings constructed several years ago when pit
storage was first popular.
A non-ventilated pit results in a build-up pf harmful,
caustic gases, such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen
sulfide, methane, ammonia and mercaptans.
Hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide are heavier
than air and, as the level of pit waste rises closer to
the slats, the gases are forced closer to the animals.
Results of inhaling these gases may be deep, fast
breathing from CO 2 . Hydrogen sulfide is. one of the
most toxic gases to animals and humans associated
with liquid manure storage. This gas can cause
severe irritatfon to the eyes and respiratory system
and sometimes can result in death.
