The Lancaster County 4-H Judging Team representing Penn sylvania exhibited their know ledge about livestock when they competed for honors with 140 other 4-H members from 35 states during the National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest recently in Louis ville, Ky. The event was held in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition. The primary objective of the Livestock Judging Contest was to provide youth enrolled in 4-H livestock projects with the oppor tunity to demonstrate their know ledge of livestock-related subject matter in a national competitive setting The Pennsylvania Team of Pet er Hoffines, Marietta; Wendall Landis, Manheim; Mark Tracy, Elizabethtown; and Dwain Liven good, Lancaster placed third in the highly competitive contest which included classes of beef, sheep, and swine, including both market and breeding animals, most with performance data. The contest also included four sets of oral rea sons and two classes with ques tions - testing the judger’s ability to recall details about the animals Pennsylvania’s team placed sec ond in beef judging, fourth in SCRAPE, DIG, PULL, LOAD, TILL, MOW AND MORE 4-H’ers Finish 3d In National Contest sheep judging, 12th in swine judg ing, and eighth in oral reasons. Top individual for Pennsyl vania was Wendall Landis, who, on his way to second place over all, achieved third in beef judging and ninth in sheep judging. Dwain Livengood, who placed third overall, also placed fifth in sheep judging and sixth in beef judging. In preparation for their trip to Louisville, the team competed in four interstate competitions, plac ing third at the Keystone Interna tional in October. En route to Lou isville, the group, including coaches Greg Musser, Mount Joy and Chet Hughes, extension live stock agent, practiced at Harvest Plantation, McKean Bios. Angus, Ohio State University, The Uni versity of Kentucky, and Shipley Duroc/Large Whites. The team also enjoyed a tour of thorough bred horse farms in Lexington, Ky. including the Keenland Race track and Churchhill Downs. The winning team in the 1991 contest was Illinois, followed by Indiana, with Pennsylvania in third. Contest support and awards to top winners were sponsored by the North American International Livestock Exposition, livestock breed associations, and animal in dustry sources.
