New Castle County
Teens Win 4-H Awards
When the 70th National 4-H
Congress begins next month in
Chicago, eight New Castle Coun
ty, Del., teens will be among Dela
ware's representatives. These
4-H'ers won the privilege to attend
the conference, which will be held
Dec. 7-11, by taking lop honors
for their 4-H program activities in
a statewide evaluation.
Nancy L. Cleaver (Middle
town), Bemita S. Jenkins (Wil
mington), James E. Leary (New
ark), Kristen M. Nye (Wilming
ton), James H. Skaggs (Clayton),
Lisa Toccafondi (Bear), Christine
Tymes (Wilmington), and Brian
M. Wood (Middletown) will parti
cipate in the conference, where
they will compete with 4-H'ers
from around the country for
national scholarships and awards.
Cleaver, 18-year-old daughter
of Thomas and Dorothy Cleaver,
won the state award for clothing.
A member of the Hi-Bridge 4-H
Club for eight years and a senior at
William Penn High School,
Cleaver plans a career in nursing
or child care. Her trip is being
funded by Coats & Clark and Sin
ger Sewing Co.
Jenkins, who won an award in
the food and nutrition category, is
17 and the daughter of Vivian
Jenkins. She is a senior at McKean
High School and has been a mem
ber of the Highlanders 4-H Club
for six years. Jenkins hopes to
pursue a career in medicine. Her
trip to Chicago is being sponsored
by the National 4-H Council.
Scventecn-year-old Leary was
recognized with the citizenship
award. He is the son of Robert and
Lise Leary. A Salesianum School
senior, Leary has been a member
of the Fantastics 4-H Club for
eight years. The Coca-Cola
Foundation will fund his trip.
Nye, a 17-year-old junior at
Dickinson High School, garnered
a food and nutrition award. She is
the daughter of Don and Kathleen
Nye. A 9-year Highlanders 4-H
Club member, Nye is a senior at
Dickinson High School. Her trip is
being sponsored by Kraft General
Foods.
Skaggs, 18, took the top award
for agriculture. The son of Ernest
and Jane Skaggs, he is a 9-year
member of the Friendship 4-H
Club and a senior at Smryna High
School. He plans to become an
accountant. CASE IH and Purina
Mills Inc. are funding his trip to
the conference.
A 17-year-old senior at St.
Marks High School, Toccafondi
won a state leadership award. She
is the daughter of Rolando and
Barbara Toccafondi and has been
a member of the Porter Gang 4-H
Club for eight years. Toccafondi
plans to study voice and cultural
anthropology. Bridgestone/
Firestone Trust Fund is sponsor
ing her trip to Chicago.
Tymes, a 17-year-old senior at
Christiana High School and an
active community volunteer, was
recognized with a leadership
award. Tymes is the granddaugh
ter of Florence Bums. She has
been a member of the ABC 4-H
Club for seven years. The Dela
ware 4-H Foundation is sponsor
ing her trip.
Wood won an award for horti
culture. The 16-year-old sopho
more at Caravel Academy is the
son of Ronald and Karen Wood.
He has been a member of the
Blackbird 4-H Club for eight
years. His trip is being funded by
the Delaware State Grange.
The eight New Castle County
teens will join four other Dela
ware teens in Chicago. About
1,000 4-H representatives from 50
slates and Puerto Rico were
selected by the Cooperative
Extension System to attend the
five-day educational and cultural
event. A total of 256 scholarships
valued at 5317.000 will be
awarded during the week.
4-H is the youth education
program of the Cooperative
Extension System of state land
grant universities and the U.S.
Department of Agriculture.
National 4-H Council, which con
ducts the National 4-H Congress,
is a not-for-profit organization
that uses private resources to
enhance the development and edu
cation of youth.

Warren stated there were 112 indi
viduals making up 28 teams, from
the East and Midwest states.
Other honors went to Tim Lud
wick of Sugar Grove of the East
ern Dairy 4-H Club. He had the
Bth highest individual score for
oral reason in the all breed judging
and Ron Riedel of the Western
Dairy Club placed 7th in the same
division. The Warren County
dairy team also placed 3rd of the
28 teams for the oral reasons com
petition and were only four points
from first place. Team members
are Tim Ludwick, son of Mr. &
Mrs. Mickey Ludwick of Sugar
Grove; Belmer Hitchcock, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Willard Hitchcock
of Russell; Tom Brown, son of
Mr. and Mrs. John Brown of
Lottsville; and Ron Riedel, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Ransom Riedel, Jr.
of Cony.
Other honors included the
Brown Swiss breed judging categ
ory the Warren County team earn
ing Ist place of 28 teams partici
pating. They received a clipboard
from the Brown Swiss Associa
tion. Individual member placings
were Belmer 4th and Tom 7th.
With the Guernsey Breed the
county team placed sth with over
all scores. Individual member
placings were Belmer 3rd and Ron
9th of the 112 participants. In the
Jersey Breed the county team
placed Bth with overall scores,
with Tim placing 4th and Ron
placing Bth in individual scores.
According to Phyllis Wright
extension agent/4-H, this was the
only team from Pennsylvania. The
team won at the Penn State
Achievement Day competition
