ANSWER —Barbara Gaugler, Mansfield, requested
a recipe for canning garden salad mix. Thanks to Mary
Lehman, Pine Grove, for sending a recipe.
1 cup vinegar
2 cups water
1 teaspoon salt per quart
2 to 3 stalks dill per quart
% teaspoon alum, optional
1 teaspoon pickling spices
Garlic, optional
1 grape leaf, placed in bottom of jar
Use 1 cup vinegar to 2 cups water. Add salt; add salt
and dill. Heat to boiling. Add to mix or green tomatoes.
The green tomatoes should be cold packed no more
than 6 to 8 minutes. Green peppers can be added.
Precook and pack in jars: celery, carrots, sweet pep
pers, small onions, cucumbers, cauliflower, and 1 hot
pepper per quart.
Rut in boiling water bath for 8 to 10 minutes.

granola bars, here is one from Marian Hoover, Ephrata,
who said these are delicious.
Granola Bars
1% cups granola cereal
3 /4 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
% teaspoon salt
% teaspoon baking soda
2 A teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
% cup butter
% cup molasses
% cup sugar
Nuts, dates, or raisins, optional
Mix dry ingredients. Add the remaining ingredients.
Spread mixture evenly in pans % -inch thick. Bake at
350 degrees for 15 minutes.
ANSWER Sonja Zehr, Croghan, NY, would like a
Jewish rye and a pumpernickel bread recipe. Thanks to

Pumpernickel (Rye)
1 ’/z cups warm water
3 packages active dry yeast
'A cup molasses
4 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons soft shortening
2 tablespoons caraway seeds
2V* cups rye flour
3 1 /z to 4 cups flour
In a bowl, dissolve yeast in water; stir in molasses,
sugar, salt, shortening and seeds. Add flour until dough
is smooth and easy to handle. Turn onto floured board.
Knead. Let rise for about 2 hours in warm place. Shape
into 2 round, slightly flattened loaves. Place on opposite
comers of greased baking sheet. Sprinkle with corn
meal. Coverwith cloth. Let rise about 1 hour. Heat oven
to 375 degrees. Bake 30 to 35 minutes.

the Pennsylvania Christmas Show
in Harrisburg, on Dcx. 5.

mittee, the bus trip will take parti
cipants to the show is held at the
Farm Show Complex.
The show includes 400 specialty
shoppes with gifts priced from $2
to $5OO. There are also profession
al ice shows, choral and musical
groups, and make and take craft
demonstrations. Persons attending
the show will see 35 decorated
trees, decorated mandcs and dis
plays, and the Olde Christmas Vil
lage with its 17 life-size buildings
and tents.
The bus will depart from the A
& P parking lot in North Towanda
at 7 a.m. and from the Acme Mark
et parking lot in Canton at approxi
mately 7:30 a.m.
On the way to the show there
will be a stop at a McDonald's. The
bus should arrive at the show at
approximately 11 a.m. and will
depart at 4 p.m.
On the return trip a dinner slop
will be made at the Country Cup
board in Lewisburg. The bus -will
arrive back in Canton at about 8:30
p.m. and in North Towanda at
about 9 p.m.
The bus trip and ticket into the
show will cost $24. Additional
money will be needed for meals,
which are on your own, for make
and take craft demonstrations, and
for purchasing gifts.
