HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.)
Hundreds of horse enthusiasts
gathered to show and compete in a
variety of events that made up the
Horse Division of the 35th Annual
Keystone International Livestock
Exposition (KILE), held in the
State Farm Show Complex in Har
risburg from October 3-7. KILE
is one of the premier indoor lives
tock shows on the North Ameri
can Continent.
Both draft (heavy) and riding
(light) horses were represented in
the division. Draft breeds included
Belgian, Clydesdale, Percheron,
and Shire. Riding breeds included
Appaloosa, Arabian, Paint, Paso
Fino, and Quarter Horse.
Horses were presented in both
halter classes,' where they arc
judged on their qualities while
standing or walking, and perfor
mance or hitch classes. In the per
formance classes, light horses arc
shown at gait while under rider,
and for the hitch classes, draft
horses arc shown while pulling
carts or wagons.
Two Saturday evening events
added a special excitement to the
Horse Division at KILE.
The Glatfelter Challenge of the
Breeds involved six invited horses
and their riders judged on their
performance in six events, includ
ing English Pleasure, Hunter
Hack, Pleasure Driving, Western
Pleasure, Western Riding, and an
exciting Barrel Race. Owner/
Rider Shirley Craig of Notting
ham and her Arabian, Imperial
Mandan, traded high placings
with Susan Vohn of Grantvillc
and her Quarter Horse “Watch Me
Winsome” throughout the com
petition before breaking the tie
with a thrilling low time of 20.47
in the Barrel Race.
Interspersed with the Glatfelter
Challenge of the Breeds were
Draft Four and Six Horse Hitch
events. The 35th KILE saw a
record number of twelve six horse
hitches entered, including the top
five hitches in the nation. KILE is
a qualifying show in the North
American Six Horse Hitch Classic
Senes, where contestants earn
points at this and other shows
throughout the nation to win an
overall award. The six horse hitch
competition was presented by the
Pennsylvania Pcrcheron Associa
tion and sponsored by Jim Mays
and family, owners of the May
field Golf Club in Clarion.
Alter viewing all twelve gleam
ing and jingling six horse hitches,
Judge Craig Grange ol Dehnar,
lowa awarded first place to the
Number 36 hitch of Windmill
Acres Farm m Newton, North
Carolina.
Along with the rest of KILE,
the Horse Division events were a
great success. Both entrants and
spectators look forward to next
year’s exposition.
