fine traditional values. In the Jef
ferson era, 90 percent of education
was ethics and 10 percent was
application. Today 90 percent of
education is application and 10
percent is ethics. We need to get
back to basic core values.”
Timm used the attitudes of the
Penn State and the Natre Dame
football teams to illustrate what
you need to be successful.
‘They are team players,” Timm
said. “They are the oly college
football teams that don’t have indi
vidual names on the back of their
jerseys. To their coaches it doesn’t
matter who gets the credit. When
they win they all win.”
We need to change some things.
Through youth. Agriculture is
going to be successful. They are
the future of the schools, the state,
the country and the world.
Together we will make a
difference.”
Thomas said that we are
reminded of the importance of
agriculture three times a day when
we eat. But so often we become
complacent and take food for
granted.
“I have visited practically every
major region of Pennsylvania and I
have gained a very good impress
ion of both the strength and the
diversity of the agricultural indus
tries in this commomwealth,” Tho
mas said. “The impace of agricul
ture is very well stated in the theme
for this year’s Ag Progress Days:
"Ag Science Touches Your Life.”
“I can remember when fresh
fruits and vegetables were season
able. We forget the benefits we
have in this country. We eat very
well, but this is not true in some
other areas of the world.
“In the Soviet Union, we hear
about food lines and empty grocery
shelves. The long lines at the new
McDonalds is significant. They
don’t call it fast food. Its the best
food in town.
“What if Penn State had been in
the Soviet Union over the past 25
years, Thomas asked? “It would
have been a different country.
Land grand universities are prob
ably the most signiflcient agent for
positive change that there is in the
United States. And I believe they
will continue to be that important
agent for positive change.
Ag Progress Days were dedicated to Joe
Harrington who has headed the event for
many years. Recognition was given to
Harrington at the Penn State luncheon on
Tuesday.
