1,500 Visit Somerset Farm
GAY N. BROWNLEE
Somerset Co. Correspondent
SOMERSET (Somerset Co.)
Ignoring the gloom of overhead
clouds, some 1,500 visitors came
to the Walker Grove Farm to
enjoy Day At The Farm, spon
sored by the Somerset County
Farmer’s Association. The farm is
owned and operated by Ray M.
and son, Kurt Walker, with their
wives, Anna and Lucinda.
Several tractors and wagons
provided continuous afternoon
hayrides for as many eager adults
as there were children. Many of
them waited in a line that
resembled a stretched-out ribbon.
The beef and dairy cookoff first
place winner was Esther Mishler,
Hollsopple, with her Mexican
Lasagna. Second place was the
Sassy Beef made by Judy Rhoads,
Stoystown. Third place was Com
ghetti, prepared by Michelle
Kimek of Hollsopple.
Also hostessing the event were
slate and county queens and prin
cesses who found themselves
building the 100 foot hoagie of
beef and cheese, and later, serving
guests with ice cream sundaes
scooped from the giant one they
had made with 33 gallons of ice
cream.
A celebrity milking contest fea
tured Tim Rigby from WJAC-TV,
Johnstown, and Jim Burton,
WKYE, radio, Johnstown. Two
Walker Grove Holstein cows were
tethered at a wagon in the center
of the crowding spectators and, in
exchange for their cooperation,
given plenty of good grain to eat
while the fair progressed.
Karl Kaufman, Bedford Coun
ty, demonstrated sheep shearing
on a Romney sheep during the
afternoon.
Also available for guests was
the bam tour, petting zoo, and
machinery displays. Food samples
were cheese, lamb, potato chips,
and vanilla ice cream topped with
pure Somerset County maple syr
up. Milk and milk punch samples
were available.
Other Somerset County organi
zations that helped with the event
included the Dairy Promotion
Committee, Allied Milk Produc
ers, Beef Producers, Maple Pro
ducers, Sheep and Wool Growers,
and Potato Growers.
Co-chairman for the event were
Jay Shaffer, Somerset and Jim
Brant, Berlin.
