Earlier in the convention during
the business meeting of the
National All-Jersey Inc., Richard
Clauss, its president, also gave a
message of optimism.
“I realize it is difficult for us as
dairy farmers to have much optim
ism due to depressed milk prices,”
Class said. “Being a dairy farmer,
like most of you, 1 have seen the
size of my monthly milk check
decrease by about 30 percent in
recent months.

“I too wake up in the middle of
the night thinking about what I
should do to make Clauss Dairy
Farms more efficient,” he said.
But he said that every morning
he goes to a local coffee shop and
meets with from eight to 12 other
Jersey dairymen for breakfast.

the group discusses the problems
and changes happening within the
breed, the industry and the
government

optimistic about the dairy industry

The success of 1990 ‘Too
often we forget what a good year
1990 was. On the farm, we had
record milk prices. These milk
prices helped many of us reduce
debt and make some needed
improvements. Things would be
much worse now, if 1990 had not
been such a good year.”
Milk prices are improving
“They are on their way up again.
“/ know It works and I know wol without It.
We definitely have seen higher milk production with
the Rumhcult. We're getting more milk off the same
amount of feed. Plus, the cows are staying on feed
and herd health is good overall. '

In today’s market-oriented dairy
economy, milk prices are behaving
the way a noted economist, Milton
Friedman protrayed the economy.
Friedman likened the economy to a
rubber band. The further it is
pulled down in a recession, the
quicker it snaps back.”
Clauss said his statement is sup
port with the 11 cent per pound
increase in cheese price over the
past two months. “The cheese
price affects all of us,” he said.
