Winebark said, with all their years of experience and learning about livestock, they “are starting to mature at this point They worked at it once a week, every week, and decided they were going to win, and did.” Chet Hughes said the junior champion team is ‘ ‘becoming very competitive” and should do well at the State 4-H Achievement Days at the end of this month. The regional competition, including 4-H’ers from Lancaster, York, Lebanon, Chester, Lehigh, Dauphin, and Berks counties, is a prelude to the upcoming state fairs. This is the fifth contest since com petition began in 1986. Reasons; 1. Daryl 30 YEARS AGO -A family night program with a covered dish social in the Eli zabethtown park is being planned by the Society of Farm Women 6. The picnic is being scheduled to take the place of the regular monthly meeting of the group on August S at 6:30 p.m. At the last meeting of the group last Saturday in the home of Mrs. Mark Geyer, announcement was made of Farm Women’s camp at Camp Swatara Aug. 27-29. Hostesses at the meeting were Mrs. Mark Geyer, Mrs. Elmer Brill, who had charge of the devo tional period, and Mrs. C. R. Frey. The group saw three films furn ished by the local telephone company. -Juliann Erb, a member of the Red Rose Baby Beef and Lamb Club for three years, was elected Wednesday night to represent that group in the county Posture Queen contest. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Erb, Mount Joy Rl, Juliann was a contestant in the county junior posture queen contest five years ago. She is a member of 4-H sewing and cooking clubs in addi tion to the beef club, and has a recortd of eight years participation in 4-H club work. THIS WEEK -An attack on the inadequacies of the federal income tax system by Senator Hugh Scott, and praise for Agriculture Secretary Orville Freeman’s positive approach to agriculture by Senator Joseph Clark, highlighted talks by the two senators before a training confer ence for the 32S leaders of the Pen nsylvania State Grange at the Pen na. Slate University last week. Four Lancaster County Grange leaders among those attending the conference were Miss Marie Mur phy of Peach Bottom, and Miss Ruby James, Miss Jeanette McCummings,. and Mrs. Ralph Armstrong, all of Drumore. Bicksler, manager of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau Hatchery at Harrisburg and former president of the Pennsylvania Poultry Federation, was named “Poutlryman of the Year” at the Federation’s Annual Conference banquet at University Park June 29. Leslie J. Hubbard of Lancaster, another past president of the Fed eration and former recipient of the award, presented Bicksler with a framed scroll in recognition of his many years of devoted service to the Pennsylvania Poultry Industry, and particularly to the Pennsylva nia Poultry Federation. Another industry leader hon ored was Harry H. Kauffman, who retired at the end of of June as head of the Pennsylvania State Univer sity’s poultry extension division. Thomas E. Moncrief of Every body’s Poultry Magazine, Hanov er, toastmaster for the evening, presented Kauffman with a framed scroll making him an honorary life member of the Federation. Kauff man also received a piece of lug gage as a token of the Federation’s appreciation.
