    Ida’s
Notebook
Ida Risser
Today our middle daughter will
be 35 years old. I’ve heard people
say that they didn’t feel old until
they realized some of their child
ren were forty years old.
When Judy was a toddler, I
called her my “smile factory.” She
was such a pretty blond with a
constant smile. When we walked
down the street in Lancaster, folks
would turn their heads to watch
her.
She grew up as little girls do
and went off to kindergarten and
then through high school. She
picked a small college after being
very active in 4-H activities for 10
years. She had many projects
including strawberries, flowers,
sewing and cooking. She led a
cooking club that met in my kitch
en every week. Later she trans
ferred to Penn State and switched
to Food Science. In the summer
she worked for Hershey Foods

and eventually got a full-time job
there. She became manager of
their New Products Division and
developed several items that are
sold in Canada and the United
States.
When our son married a girl
from Pittsburgh, Judy met one of
his ushers. Even though he lived
in Atlanta, Georgia, and she lived
in Palmyra, Pa., they managed to
carry on a courtship and were mar
ried in the old Donegal Presbyte
rian Church near Mount Joy.
Now she lives in Atlanta with
two little girls of her own. She just
sent us a video cassette of Eli
zabeth on her swing set and of
Catherine rolling over on the
floor. It doesn’t seem that long
ago that 1 had children on a swing
under the locust tree and a little
one in the playpen on the porch.
Lots of good memories.
