Just like Dorothy wanted to go home, the scarecrow wanted a brain, the lion needed courage and the tinman craved a heart, so Robyn Groff, 17, Ephrata, wanted to be Lancaster County dairy princess. What an honor, to represent the county with the most number of cows of any county in the state, comprising 1,930 dairy farms and 90,000 cows! What an honor, on the 55th anniversary of June Dairy Month, to represent an industry that feeds 2.5 million people and generates about $220 million in income! What an honor, to be a dairy princess! Last Saturday night, Robyn, dressed as Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz,” went hand-in hand with the audience down the yellow brick road. Along the way, she asked various witches, mun chkins, and other Ozzian denizens about the benefits of milk. After ward, she was crowned Lancaster Co. dairy princess at the Farm and Home Center. Robyn found out a lot of things during the journey. The most important —milk products such as cottage cheese (low in fat and cholesterol, containing only about 1 percent milkfat); frozen yogurt (96 percent fat free); cream cheese (low in fat and cholesterol); ice cream; ice milk (50 percent less fat and cholesterol than ice cream); and lowfat milk are good for you. “So follow the yellow brick road to healthier eating habits using dairy products,” she said. Robyn, the daughter of Robert and Esther Groff, Ephrata, is a recent graduate of Ephrata High School. After being crowned, she thanked her family for help in “finding lots of information for my speech. “I would like to thank my mom for helping me those long hours for the skit and everybody else who contributed and helped me decide what I wanted to do,” said Robyn. Robyn will now assume the duties formerly held by Jacy Clug ston, 1990-1991 Lancaster Co. Dairy Princess. Jacy, in her farewell speech, described the year as one of ‘ ‘education and growth, ’ ’ she said. ‘‘My experiences have Jacy Clugston, left, former Lancaster Co. Dairy Princess, crowns Lancaster County’s new dairy princess, Robyn Groff, Ephrata, at the coronation last Saturday night. Photo by Andy Andrawa changed me into a more mature, responsible person. “It has been an honor and pri vilege to represent the highest pro ducing dairy county in Pennsylva nia,” she said. Jacy said site is excited to move on, “but I know I’ll always be the dairy princess at heart.” Also at the coronation, the 1991-1992 Dairy Darlings were selected. They are Sarah Bard, 9, daughter of George and Jackie Bard, Conestoga; Laura Blank, 8, daughter of Clifford and Joyce Blank, Gap; Megan Good, 10, daughter of Leon and Linda Good, Marietta; Laura Hershey, 10, daughter of Steve Hershey, Man heim; and Amber Shellenberger, 9, daughter of Harold and Cindy Shellenberger, Mt Joy. Sarah Bard is in 4th grade and enjoys roller skating and swim ming. She won Master Showman at a local fair the first time she showed. She enjoys feeding calves and once wrote a book for a school project about Rudy the cow. Laura Blank, second grade, enjoys feeding the calves and help ing around the farm.
