Soviet Credit Vital To American Ag
ST. LOUIS. Mo. U.S. soy
bean farmers are hailing President
Bush’s announcement yesterday
of the extension of $1.5 billion of
agricultural credit guarantees to
the Soviet Union as a vital step
forward for American agriculture.
‘The Soviet Union is the num
ber one foreign customer for U.S.
soybean meal, taking almost one
third of our total exports last
year,” said American Soybean
Association President Merle N.
McCann. “However, without the
credit guarantees, the Soviets have
been unable to purchase the much
needed protein supply that will
bolster both their poultry and
livestock industries.”
McCann said that the Soviet

agent for Franklin County (the
state’s third largest dairy county),
said, “It’s getting worse as the days
go on.
“We had some scattered show
ers. We got a few showers in a cou
ple parts of the county. Some even
got seven-tenths (of an inch), some
got a tenth. Some didn’t get any.
Overall we’re pretty dry.

been particularly hard hit by shor
tages of soybean meal. “The shor
tages have resulted in emergency
slaughterings, which, in turn, have
caused shortages of eggs and
broiler meat in many areas of the
USSR.”
Soviet purchases of U.S. agri
cultural products has declined in
recent months due to the lack of
credit. The decline in Soviet
purchases has been a key factor in
the weakness in the soybean
market in recent months, McCann
said.
“Soybean farmers are delighted
with the President’s decision,” he
said. “The credit guarantees are
good, both for American soybean
farmers and for the citizens of the
Soviet Union.”

“There’s soybean lying in Che

shallower soils they’re really
looking pretty rugged the com

little or nothing. It’s burning up.
“On the good soils, in general
there’s a second cutting there, but
it’s quite reduced ... it has
bloomed out many days ahead of
what it normally would.”
