Ida’s
Notebook
Ida Risser
June is the month or roses. This
year I bought a bush that has
salmon-colored flowers. They are
very pretty but I still like the
smgle-petaled bright pmk ones
that grow without any attention
behind our house.
My father-in-law had a big rose
garden and he spent time and
money on it Someday my hus
band wants to grow roses too. We
had an old-fashioned very thick
petaled rose in our yard when we
moved here some forty years ago.
But it got too much shade and it
was crowded out by day lilies. It
was so fragrant and I’d like to find
another like it.
It has been quite dry in our area
and I’ve been carrying water to
my begonias, impatiens, and petu
nias. The flower seeds that I
planted have not come up and my
tiny parsley was too tender and
died under the hot rays of the sun.
I replanted the parsley as it is one

plant that I use a lot in cooking. As
a result of the dry weather, my
strawberries are not as big as they
should be despite the fact that I
laid a soaker hose on the rows.
There are three black cats and
three kittens that live on my back
porch. They depend on me to feed
them but they also roam over the
garden continually. This seems to
keep the other animals out of the
garden. Only a few strawberries
were picked by the birds this year.
My iris were big and beautiful
again this year. When our church
had a May Luncheon I took a big
bouquet along. We were to bring
something that showed our inter
ests. Some paintings were display
ed, some needlework, and some
framed photos taken on travels.
People sat at the table that indi
cated the month of their birth.
Somehow I ended up at a Novem
ber table even though I have a
May birthday.
