810-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, June 8, 1991 Rambunctious Lambs Attract Crowds At Bedford LINDA WILLIAMS Bedford Co. Correspondent BEDFORD ( Bedford Co.) The first annual Bedford County Sheep and Wool Field Day was held at the Bedford Country Fair grounds on Saturday, May 18. Young people from the Young Shepherds, Shawnee Lakers, and Bedford Sheep Clubs sponsored a lot of fun events which had both young and older participants. A Lamb Olympics was compos ed of an obstacle course and those in the game had to lead a s lamb, sometimes rambunctious, through a maze of straw tunnels, under and over fences, and through rubber tires. The categories included one celebrity race with Bedford Coun ty Commissioner Kim Coon; local plumbing business owner, Clair Kniscly; Coach Room Restaurant owner, Bob Barnhart; and Bedford Mayor Jim Edwards being helped by 4-H members. Heather Schaeffer and her grandmother, Charlotte, plac ed first in one division of the lamb dressing contest. They are from the Friends Cove area of Bedford. Commissioner Kim Coon and his yoi >ig> ipei Myers of Bedford Valley work their way through the maze. A lamb-dressing event followed with various age groups dressing sometimes patient and sometimes otherwise lambs with 13 odd pieces of clothing. Local sheep shearer Karl Kauf man did a sheep shearing demon stration. Tom Culvert of Somerset spoke on rotational grazing and there were lamb spinning and dy ing demonstrations. A highlight of the afternoon was a lamb cooking contest with Belly Slayton acting as the official judge. Lamb dishes prepared by area cooks were varied. When judged and set out for the public, the food disappeared quickly. The day ended with a lamb judging contest and a market lamb sale. “It was a big success, much bet ter than we had hoped for,” says Dick Dale of the Bedford County Extension Office. “It will definite ly be repeated next year.” The sheep maze was set up in the fairgrounds where crowds gathered to watch teams lead their sheep through the maze.
