Northeast DHIA Announces New York State Quality Awards
Among the approximate 4,500 Northeast Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) members who are
measuring the quality of milk produced on their farm with the DHIA Somatic Cell Count Report, five
hundred ninety one have won Outstanding Quality Milk Awards based on 1990 records. To qualify for this
award, members must maintain an average rolling tank somatic cell count of 175,000 or less and tpust be
signed up on the Somatic Cell Program for a minimum of 6 months.
The DHI Somatic Cell Count Report is a valuable monthly monitor of individual, group average and herd
average somatic cell counts. Somatic cells are white blood cells and milk-secreting cells normally found in
milk. The major factors contributing to high somatic cell count milk are clinical and subclinical udder
infections. Low somatic cell count milk comes from healthy udders.
Constant monitoring of bam and pasture cleanliness, working condition and cleanliness of milking
equipment, millring technique, and udder infection is-necessary to achieve the low level of somatic cell count
recognized by the DHIA Quality Milk Award. The following Northeast DHIA members are praised for their
diligence and success in producing this outstanding, quality milk.
