Pennsylvania Dairy Fact Sheet
- Pennsylvania ranks fifth in the nation in milk production,
producing 6.9 percent of the nation's milk supply.
- The number of commercial dairy farms (10 or more milk cows) is
estimated at 13,200.
- Pennsylvania's milk production for last year was 10 billion
pounds. The average milk production per cow was 14,32* pounds
which is an increase of 92 pounds from 1988.
The number of milk cows in the Commonwealth averaged 698,000
head last year, 19,000 less than 1988. Although the number of
cows has dropped, milk production per cow continues to increase.
Pennsylvania's plants manufactured 73.6 million gallons of
ice cream making it second nationally to California which holds
first place with 107.8 million gallons.
Nationally, Pennsylvania was fourth in butter production with
67.2 million pounds and was fifth in total cheese production with
220.6 million pounds.
Counties with over 50,000 head of cattle (beef and dairy) are
listed in order of ranking: Lancaster, Bradford, Franklin,
Chester, York, Bedford, Lebanon and Cumberland.
