Observing Cows Pays Off

In newborn calves you may
occasionally see no manure at all
because the calf was bom with an
intestinal obstruction or no anus at
all, which, of course, also calls for
immediate decision and/or a
veterinarian.
The color of manure changes
with the main feed eaten.
Green forage and hay produces
brown-olive-colored manure;
much grain changes the color to
grayish-olive. Slow manure pas
sage darkens the color, makes it
ball-shaped and shiny mucus
covered. Diarrhea makes the color
paler than normal. Hemorrhages
darken the manure to blackish or
red-brown, depending on how far
up the tract something happened.
The odor of fresh manure is nor
mally not unpleasant unless there
is some putrefaction, fermentation,
indigestion and infection up the
gut.
Gas bubbles in manure are typi
cal of diarrhea conditions, or
worse, Johne's disease. They could
also indicate enteritis, even acido
sis in calves and cows, which
sometimes is called over-eating
disease and enterotoxemia.
Worms may be found in man
ure, and you know what that calls
for in calves or cows.
Acidity of manure may also
indicate beginning problems such
as diarrhea, because normal cow or
calf manure is slightly alkaline.
Too much grain feeding also leads
to acidity of manure. This, of
course, means acidosis problems,
displaced abomasum, rumen para
