crop yields and hurt'profitability.
Soil testing is a good means of
assessing the potassium status of
the soil, but potassium responses
may occur under conditions where
soil tests show that potassium is
adequate.

even when soil tests were

All com hybrids in the test
responded to potash application,
but responses of some were much
larger than others. Compaction
and cold, wet soil conditions
increase needs for potash in star
ters, even when soil tests are high.
Commercial potash fertilizers
include potassium chloride (KCI),
potassium sulphate (K2SO4),
potassium-magnesium sulphate
(K2SO4-2MgSO4), and potassium
nitrate (KNO3). These compounds
dissolve rapidly and are readily
available for crop use.

corrected with topdressed potash
applied as late as June.
Commercial fertilizer sources of
potash are equally effective
regardless of the color of the
material and whether applied in a
liquid or dry form. On very sandy
soils, broadcast applications may
be most effective due to greater
contact with soil particles which
can hold potassium against leach
ing. Where subsoil potassium is
depleted, some form of deep place
ment may be advisable.
Foliar applications in the form
of potassium nitrate can help
enhance late season uptake, espe
cially where plant demands are
extremely high, such as those of
high-yielding cotton varieties.
This is a supplemental, not a com
plete, potash program.
