Students Hatch Chicks
Students in eight Lycoming
County School classrooms are
hatching chicks this year as part of
a special project sponsored by the
4-H department of Penn State
Cooperative Extension.
Under the supervision of the
teachers, students care for chicks
in an incubator while they develop.
Most eggs are obtained from the
poultry science department at the
university.
One school is hatching pheasant
eggs obtained from the Loyalsock
Game Farm and another is work
ing with special “fancy” chicken
eggs from Tioga County.
Through the project, the stu
dents are able to observe the daily
development of the embryo by
“candling” it: holding it up to a

light to see the embryo. Students
learn to keep records as they daily
monitor the temperature inside the
incubator, the amount of humidity
as seen on the hygrometer, and the
number of times the eggs are
turned daily.
Students are also able to work
through a manual and learn the
principles of reproduction
through egg fertilization and cell
division. They learn the parts of
the egg and understand the incuba
tion process. After the chicks
hatch, they iearn how to take care
of them; how to to water and feed
them; and how to keep them clean
and warm.
In Pennsylvania, more than
40,000 students take part in the
chick embryology project every
year.

ship awareness event, held recen
tly in Harrisburg.
They were among 160 students
from across the state who partici
pated in the two-day program that
shows 4-H’ers how the state gov
ernment works and helps them
understand the responsibilities
they have as citizens.
On Monday, April 8, the
4-H’ers visited different state
agencies, including the depart
ments of agriculture, transporta
tion, education, and commerce.

On Monday evening. Friends of
4-H donors were recognized with a
banquet. The donors were seated
with the 4-H’ers so they could
learn about different 4-H
programs.
On Tuesday morning, 4-H’ers
joined Sen. Roger Madigan at a
legislative banquet. The day ended
with a tour of the capitol and visits
to legislator’s offices.
