HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) Thirty-one farms were recently designated by the State Department of Agriculture as offi cial Pennsylvania Century Farms, according to Secretary of Agricul ture Boyd E. Wolff. “We are pleased to honor these farm owners for their dedication and contributions to our agricultur al heritage. The farm family is still the backbone of our state and nation, and we are firmly commit ted to the preservation of our farm land resources,” he said. The Century Farms Program was established to help publicize the strengths and durability of Pen nsylvania farm families and to stress the importance of agricul ture to all citizens of the Common wealth. This brings to 1,545 the number of farms recognized by the department as Century Farms. To qualify as a Pennsylvania Century Farm, the farm must be owned by the same family for 100 or more consecutive years and a family member must currently live on the farm. In addition, the farm must contain at least 10 of the orig inal acres or gross more than $l,OOO annually from the sale of farm products. Applications are available from the Department of Agriculture by calling (717) 787-4737.
